National Parks Magazine - National Parks Magazine is the membership publication of the nonprofit National Parks Conservation Association, a Washington, D.C., advocacy group focused on the preservation of America's favorite places. NPCA's 330,000 members support the organization's work to secure funding for our parks, protect wildlife habitat, fend off attempts to drill for oil and gas on adjacent land, and ensure there are plenty of park rangers at scenic vistas and campfire talks.
National Parks' editors have selected some of their favorite images from the magazine's final page, which features a single image along with a story from the photographer who captured it--from an unexpected encounter with a marmot in Glacier National Park and a magical moment with a herd of Yellowstone bison to waves crashing on the shores of Olympic and "light painting" in Death Valley. You've seen many of these places in print countless times before, but never quite like this. |

Dave FitzSimmons - Portrait photographers since Richard Avedon have utilized plain white backgrounds to dramatically emphasize subjects. As Avedon pointed out, white implies absence, clearing a space devoid of distractions. As such, subject encompasses the entire photograph.
In “Curious Critters” Sigma Pro photographer Dave FitzSimmons brings softly lit luminous backgrounds to animal portraiture, letting creatures stand solo, uninfluenced by land, sea, or sky. Seen from eye-level, these often-overlooked creatures—from flies and frogs to snakes and squirrels—look captivating, colorful, beautiful, and bizarre. The exhibit invites visitors to a new kind of overlook: a place where seeing, appreciating, and caring for all beings is paramount. |
