Description:

National Geographic photographer Bill Ellzey has taught and directed workshops in Telluride for 11 years. His workshop, The Digital SLR, Autumn Photography, Lightroom, is for the moderately experienced DSLR shooter and the professional. This workshop starts with professional camera handling techniques learned in the field, not from a manual. Next, two full days are nothing but photography in Telluride's most spectacular season. Day 4 is how to wrap up any shoot: download; edit; keyword and make adjustments to your photos with Lightroom. The two full days of shooting in the middle of the workshop take advantage of the spectacular autumn landscape in the Telluride region. In addition students will learn about high dynamic range (HDR) photography because it’s the way to tame ultra high contrast scenes. Panorama techniques will also be covered in these sessions. Students in this workshop will be on location at sunrise and sunset. In addition to grand landscapes, other possible subjects to photograph in this workshop may include streams, lakes, waterfalls, and ghost towns with emphasis on reflections, blurs, fall foliage and close ups. This workshop will also include a practical day in the classroom to learn the power of Lightroom and practice organizing, key wording and adjusting your images. There will be critiques of the work created during this workshop on the final day.

Students should bring their portfolios, DSLR camera, tripod, laptop and the corresponding digital software and cables to download for critique.

Biography:

Bill Ellzey was a cowboy photographer. He still cowboys occasionally, just to keep his hand in, on the family ranch in the Texas panhandle. And his photography has taken him a long way from the western images that were his first love: from Australia to Egypt, from India to China, from the Rockies in mid-winter to the jungles of Central America in mid-summer. Along the way, Bill's commitment to photography as a full time working pro has led him to explore widely diverse worlds of photography — fine art black and white, portraiture (classic and outdoor), sports action (rodeo to skiing), commercial, industrial, advertising, aerial photography, editorial assignments and stock.

After university (psychology and electrical engineering), Bill discovered photography during a four-year hitch in the Air Force, and there was no going back. . . . A self-taught photographer, Ellzey now teaches others. He founded Western Photo Workshops in Telluride, Colorado and was its director for eleven years. Sought for his varied experience and easy lecturing style, he has taught for schools such as Anderson Ranch Arts Center and Winona International School of Professional Photography. Ellzey is a respected juror for professional and amateur photographic exhibitions.

Today he works in 35mm, 2 1/4 sq., panorama and digital; keeps a darkroom on the family ranch on the Texas prairie, and another in the San Luis Valley, Crestone, Colorado, which is his current home base. Bill was one of 20 international photographers invited to Australia to create the book, Salute to Western Australia. A writer as well as photographer, his articles have appeared in Photo District News, Outdoor Photographer and Camera & Darkroom, to name a few.

He is a member of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) and the Professional Photographers of America. Ellzey is also past president of the Panhandle Professional Photographers Association, and was on the board of directors of the Texas Professional Photographers Association, and ASMP, Colorado chapter.
